What is Phoenix Yoga Project’s mission?

How do I register and join Phoenix Yoga Project classes?

Go to www.phoenixyogaproject.org. Enter your name and email address when prompted; this action allows you to register for future classes. You only do this once. Going forward you will receive an email the day before each free class. All information necessary to join a class is provided in the email. Simply respond “yes” to the email if you wish to join the class. Otherwise, delete the email.

What if I don’t receive the email to register before a class begins?

No problem. Look for the email by 6:00 pm the day before each class. Check your junk folder first. If you haven’t received it, go to the website and click on the Classes tab. Scroll to the bottom where you’ll find the class email information.

May I attend class if I have not registered through email?

Yes, unless the class is indoors where space is limited. You may also arrive with friends that have not registered.

How much do classes cost?

All Phoenix Yoga Project classes are free. Tax deductible donations are appreciated for those that are able.

How do I donate?

The website and email you receive for each class has a link to donate. Zelle is also an option.

Are classes free because they are not to the high standard of a yoga studio?

Absolutely not! Recently Phoenix Yoga Project was rated the 2nd best yoga studio in Chicago based upon Google reviews. Also, Phoenix Yoga Project teachers either teach at yoga studios or own their own yoga business.

When and where are classes held?

The class schedule is found on the website under the Classes tab. Notice that classes are held indoors, outdoors at a beach or park, and on Zoom. Under the list of classes, find all information pertaining to the next class offered.

Are there classes suitable for beginners and children?

Yes, most classes are structured for beginners. There are some styles offered, such as Yin and Restorative yoga, that are particularly beginner friendly. But the “flow” classes are also intended for beginners, as well as intermediate level students. Children are welcome to all outdoor classes.

Are there Senior yoga classes?

Yes, there is one indoor class located at the Chicago Cultural Center specifically for ages 55 and over.

What styles of yoga are taught?

  • Hatha: An excellent starting point, Hatha focuses on holding poses to build strength and flexibility.
  • Restorative: Uses many props to fully support the body, allowing for deep relaxation and stress relief.
  • Yin: A slow-paced style where floor-based poses are held for several minutes, primarily focusing on the lower body, stressing muscles bones and joints intelligently to increase mobility.
  • Vinyasa: An active style referred to as “flow” linking poses together into continuous sequences synchronized with the breath.
  • Slow Flow or Gentle Yoga: A hybrid between Hatha and Vinyasa, offering a slower pace.

When do outdoor class begin and end?

Outdoor classes are held when it is warm enough (high 50s) and not raining. Historically classes have started in late April and ended early to mid-November.

What should I bring to an outdoor class?

  • Mat, towel or blanket. Some may wish to place a towel or blanket underneath the mat for protection.
  • Props if convenient to transport but they are not necessary.
  • Water, or your favorite non-alcoholic refreshment to hydrate.
  • Sunscreen. There is shade for all outdoor classes but make your Dermatologist happy and use it.

Are class times listed on the website subject to change or cancellation?

Yes, particularly outdoor classes. In some cases the weather dictates a change in schedule or cancellation. That’s why it is important to check the class email for any changes. In rare cases indoor and Zoom classes must change based upon teacher availability.
